“That jerkwad just tore up my butt for walking through the damn house.” I huff, rubbing my backside.

Aris lets out a muffled chuckle and my anger doubles.

“It’s not funny!” I snap, then immediately regret it.

The big blond alpha’s brows shoot up, and his mouth pulls into a tight line. “What was that?” he asks in a stern tone.

“Nothing.” I duck my head, praying he doesn’t spank me too. While I don’t think Aris is the kind of alpha for physical punishment, I don’t want to find out. My ass can’t handle it.

“It’s okay.” Brin tucks a strand of my hair behind my ear. “Han is a really forgiving alpha. He won’t hold a grudge for being disobeyed.”

It takes everything in me not to scream at the top of my lungs.

While most alphas would disagree, omegas aren’t pets to be trained. We’re real-life people who deserve to make our own decisions—even something as simple as checking in on an injured packmate. But that’s not the way the world works. I’ve been fighting that fact since I was eighteen years old, and if I’m honest, I’m just so tired.

“How is Cam?” I ask Aris. “The doctor said something about not letting him be alone with us. Why?”

Aris’ eyes go wide and he freezes as if surprised. “You didn’t hear?”

I shake my head. “We didn’t hear much at all.”

Aris lets out a long sigh, then leans forward in his chair. For a moment, he looks as if struggling to find his words. “Cameron is an alpha.”

Silence pulses in my ears as I try like hell to understand what the alpha just said. There’s no way I heard him right.

“Wait.” Deep lines twist between Brin’s dark brows. “What?”

Aris nods as if understanding his confusion. “Apparently, Cam is an alpha,” he repeats. This time slower, looking each one of us in the eyes. “He’s transitioning, which means he’s aggressive and…” Aris snorts, then laughs, “he’s really fucking horny. It’s important we keep you both away from him. Which is why,” he cuts me a firm look, “it’s important to do as you're told and stay in this room.”

I bristle at that, refusing to admit he has a point.

“Is that why Cam smells so weird?” Brin whispers as if his question might earn him a beating.

Aris tilts his head, looking carefully at Brin’s sweet face, and exposed chest. The omega is so small, with visible ribs and a thin stomach. Male omegas are always small compared to alphas, but Brin looks especially underfed. Depression will do that to a person.

“Has Cam smelled weird for a while?” Aris asks Brin.

“Yeah,” the omega’s shoulders curl inward, “for months now, he’s smelled like a stranger. It’s scary and weird.”

Aris nods, blinking slowly, as he listens to Brin speak.

“I wanted to tell Han.” Brin bites his bottom lip, fidgeting with the hem of his pants. “But it was around the time that Han…” he trails off, sniffling like he wants to cry.

Aris pushes himself out of the chair, crawling into the nest next to Brin.
